The Magic of Lino Printing
Two Day Workshop with Peter Ursem
24/25 September 2011
10.30am - 4.30pm
Cost: £120 (Accommodation + Meals at 'Colmers View' are extra)

A weekend workshop to learn the magic of lino-printing, a simple technique of creating a print by carving a relief into a block of linoleum, inking the surface and printing this with a press or spoon on to paper. The stark contrast of black and whites can be used to create strong and striking images.
On day one of this workshop you learn the entire process, from planning your design on paper,to cutting, inking and printing your work.On the second day we focus on creating a second print, this time using two or three colours. You will learn how to make sure that all printed colours are properly 'registered' in order to end up in the correct place on your image.
About Peter Ursem:
Graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague (1995), Dutch artist Peter Ursem worked mainly on large multi-panelled canvasses. After his move to Dorset in 1999 he initially had to make do with a kitchen table for a studio, which rekindled his love for relief printmaking: woodcuts and linocuts. The simple principle of carving a relief demands finding the essential shapes, textures, patterns and rhythms that define the character of a print. With ‘Reflections, a book of woodcuts of the river Stour’ (2000) Ursem successfully combined the expressionist potential of the medium with his romantic adoption of his new surroundings. Ursem went on to establish his name, the landscape becoming an ever stronger inspiration for his multi-coloured relief prints and paintings. ‘Dorset Footprint’, Ursem’s exhibition in the Dorset County Museum earlier this year, showed new paintings, drawings and prints in the context of a first decade in Dorset.

10.00am - 4.00pm
Cost: £120 (Accommodation + Meals at 'Colmers View' are extra)

Liz will explain how to choose and interperet a subject in order to plan and then create an original print.Expect to walk in the landscape, talk about it,look and think.
Using various artist’s work as reference,Liz will discuss why she thinks a particular subject was chosen and what aspect the focused on e.g. quality of light, colour, form and texture.
Printmaking offers unique qualities and possibilities. The ability to draw is not always necessary as the printed image leads the artist into a different sphere, the realm of exciting and unplanned for results. Lots of different techniques can be used and Liz will help you choose the most appropriate for your work. By the end of the weekend you will leave with a completed image e.g.linocut, monoprint or collagraph.
Liz graduated from Winchester school of Art in 1988 with a degree in Textile Design. In London whilst freelancing for a fashion forecasting co.and print design agents she continued to develop her painting and prints. She moved to West Dorset in 2004 to concentrate on her printmaking and painting. Her work explores the texture, rythm and muscularity of the land.
The technique she is working with now combines relief printing with painting. This allows her to re-work a single image many times, changing it’s appearance in each case. Each piece of work is unique.

Lino Printing Workshop
with Peter Ursem
26+27 March 2011
10:30 - 4:30
One of the benefits of lino printmaking is that you can do it on a corner of your kitchen table. Even a simple spoon can make a very good press. In this workshop Peter Ursem will guide you through a range of basic techniques in lino printing. The (optional) theme will be taken from the beautiful landscape around 'Colmers View'. This subject matter is ideal to experiment with the flow and fall of light and to explore the importance of composition and mark making for bringing your print to life. As part of this two day workshop Peter will present many inspiring examples of printmaking, with a particular focus on the woodcut, wood engraving and linocut.
